The Cottage is a large pub/restaurant with an adjoining function room that can be hired for private use. It has a large car-park and extensive gardens, set at the edge of a well-wooded urban area – very pleasant. The decor is modern and reasonably tastefully done, thus avoiding losing the character of the old pub bar, this being kept distinctly seperate from the dining area. A reasonable selection of beers (including real ale), wines, spirits and soft drinks were available. On our recent visit, despite having not booked and the restaurant being quite busy, there were still tables available at 8.45pm on a Saturday evening and we were soon efficiently seated. Our drinks order was taken and swiftly delivered, along with the menus and concise information regarding available specials. Good-looking, home-cooked-type foods were available as well as some more refined dishes, thus pretty well catering for all tastes (including vegetarian). We were soon able to order and eagerly awaited our food. Unfortunately the speed with which we were seated and our order taken was not replicated in the delivery of the food. It was not an overly long wait, just longer than we hoped, but not long enough to complain. To be fair, it was quite busy, and we did not order a starter (this being the course which usually buys the chef’s team a little time). The eating experience itself was pleasant enough. We both chose the smoked haddock (one of our favourites), with potatoes and seasonal vegetables. The fish was beautifully cooked, succulent and delicious and the accompanying potatoes piping hot with plenty of crisp, fresh vegetables as accompaniment. The dessert menu offered several temptations to my partner but we had both eaten enough in our main course alone and chose not to partake. All things considered the experience was very good – and all at a reasonable price. I would recommend a visit, particularly if you, like me, prefer to get a decent plateful of good home-cooked, fresh food for a sensible price. Despite the slight delay in delivering the food the service was cheery, and I suspect it was just the time of the evening on a relatively busy Saturday that caused that delay. So basically, its a thumbs-up from me, but probably best to book on a weekend night.
